SEEING THE BRAIN WITH LIGHT, WITH DR. PETERKA

The brain is a fascinatingly complex organ, with many hidden mysteries. What are some of the tools and tricks we use to help reveal its secrets?

Optical methods - techniques that rely on light, such as microscopes - are becoming a mainstay of modern neuroscience, the study of the brain and nervous system. With new microscopy techniques, we can look at features both big and small. While some of these tools involve high-tech engineering, others are borrowed directly from nature. And it is only by considering both that we get the views we want, and can watch the brain as it is working.

Join us to hear Dr. Darcy Peterka, Senior Scientist and Director of Cellular Imaging at Columbia University’s Zuckerman Institute, discuss how imaging in neuroscience reveals the brain's secrets. Dr. Peterka's work combines techniques from nearly all branches of science and engineering to apply and develop tools for studying the brain in action.
